"It's my hobby, my job, my passion," says Simonas Balkaitis, who creates unconventional botanical jewelry. Encasing the petals, leaves, and stems of flowers brought from the forest in metal, like an alchemist, he is able to preserve the beauty of the natural moment. "I want to make the beauty of the plant less temporary. If a flower is encased in metal and made into a ring, it can remain unchanged for many years,” he says.
Simonas makes jewelry using electrolysis and the knowledge of chemistry he gained at the university. He usually uses copper because of its potential to express different colors, but he also uses silver, gold, and nickel.
Simon equates diligent work with meditation. According to the jeweler, when you start to notice the details, the pace of life slows down.
Simonas Balkaitis (Lithuania) is a chemist and jeweler. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical sciences in Vilnius and a master's degree in Riga, where he worked at the Institute of Organic Synthesis. He became interested in jewelry while studying. Later he founded Simply Simon Botanic Jewelry. The jeweler has exhibited his jewelry at fairs in Finland and Latvia, and in 2019 at the Amber Trip exhibition in Vilnius.
